The Aftermath of the Florida Bridge Collapse

Mar 23, 2018 | By , on Personal Injury.

Unfortunately, automobile accidents happen far too frequently in Florida – often because of careless drivers. After an accident occurs, a Miami accident attorney should be consulted for help. Sometimes, however, incidents can occur on the road that aren’t caused by drivers but that are instead caused by infrastructure problems. One recent tragic incident occurred for this reason. The incident involved the collapse of a pedestrian bridge that caused six fatalities when the bridge fell on cars traveling along a busy road in Miami.

Florida Bridge Collapse Results in Multiple Fatalities

The Washington Post recently reported on the tragic bridge collapse that had catastrophic consequences.  The pedestrian bridge was expected to be fully completed in 2019 and the goal was to increase safety for people walking to a nearby university. The bridge would allow for pedestrians to get across an eight-lane road where a student was hit by a car and killed the year prior, according to CNN.

Tragically, months before the bridge was scheduled to open, the bridge collapsed while cables that were holding up the bridge were being tightened. The cables had reportedly begun to loosen and engineers ordered that the cables be tightened. As they were in the process of being tightened, the entire bridge collapsed.

The bridge was approximately 950 tons and vehicles that were underneath it were essentially completely flattened. One victim was able to be extracted in the aftermath of the bridge collapse, but that individual died at the hospital. A total of eight vehicles were trapped underneath the rubble of the bridge, with six of the vehicles entirely trapped and four of the cars very difficult to extract. Victims were also trapped in the vehicles, leaving police initially uncertain about the total number of people killed in the tragic incident.

After a lengthy recovery effort to remove the vehicles and the victims, the Washington Post indicated that police believed that they had gotten all of the cars out and were aware of the final death toll. A total of five people were found dead in their vehicles when the cars were extracted, bringing the death toll up to six.

Police had been able to remove two vehicles on the Saturday after the bridge collapse that occurred on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Those two vehicles had two passengers inside who had been killed. Work continued, and two more victims killed in the incident were found and extracted on Sunday.

An investigation into the cause of the bridge collapse is currently underway. The governor of Florida has also indicated that if it is discovered that there was wrongdoing or negligence, those who were responsible for the bridge collapse will be held accountable.

When there is a problem with the construction of infrastructure and injuries occur as a result of that problem, victims and surviving family members of those killed in accidents can pursue a claim for compensation. A Miami accident attorney can provide help to those who wish to pursue a claim, especially in complicated cases where the cause of an accident is not immediately clear, and an investigation must be conducted to determine who is to blame.
