Falling Safely: Tips to Help You Prevent Serious Fall Injuries

Jan 18, 2018 | By , on Personal Injury.

Fall injuries are a leading cause of brain injury, spinal cord damage, and other very serious injuries. While a fall from a high elevation to the ground is especially likely to cause permanent harm or even to result in a fatality, even a trip and fall on the same level can still put you at grave risk of physical damage.

Because of the risk of serious and permanent injuries, fall injury prevention is of paramount importance. Property owners should take all reasonable steps to prevent hazards that could result in falls and to provide warning to visitors of conditions that are likely to cause falls to occur. If property owners fail in their obligations to help prevent fall injuries, a Miami slip and fall attorney can help victims to pursue civil claims to obtain compensation for losses.

Unfortunately, victims often cannot ever fully recover after a fall, or victims could be forced to endure a lengthy and painful recovery process when serious injuries occur.  To try to reduce the likelihood of such serious injuries resulting from a fall, it’s best to read some safety tips in case a slip ever does occur.

Tips for Falling Safely

The AARP provides some advice on how you should react if you feel yourself starting to fall so you can try to lessen the severity of injuries that can result.  Their advice for falling as safely as possible includes:

  • Bending your elbows and knees: When you start to lose your balance, your natural instinct is to tense up– but this I the worst thing you can do because if you reach out with locked arms you’re likely to break an elbow or to break a wrist. If you bend your elbows and knees, you can soften the impact of the fall.
  • Protecting your head: The process for protecting your head varies depending upon which way you’re falling. If you are falling forward, turn your face sideways. If you’re falling backward, tuck your chin down into your chest to try to ensure your head doesn’t hit the ground hard.
  • Trying to land on the meaty parts of your body: When possible, try to land on your back muscles, thighs, or butt. If you aim to land on muscles, you are much less likely to break a bone.
  • Spreading the impact by continuing to fall: Most people try to stop the body as quickly as possible when falling, but if you give into the fall and even allow yourself to keep rolling, you spread the impact out and reduce the risk of serious harm.

Unfortunately, no matter how carefully you try to protect yourself in the seconds when you are falling, serious injuries can still occur. If your fall was caused by negligence of a property owner, you should take action to obtain compensation for losses. A Miami slip and fall attorney can help you to pursue a case for monetary damages so you can be make whole after a fall has harmed you.
