A Rear-Facing Car Seat Could Save Your Child’s Life

May 18, 2018 | By , on Personal Injury.

Children are very vulnerable to being hurt or killed in motor vehicle collisions, especially as their bones are softer and do not provide the same level of protection compared with the bones of adults. If an accident occurs and children suffer injury, a Miami injury lawyer should be consulted for help in pursuing a claim for compensation if another motorist was to blame for causing a crash to occur.

While parents cannot prevent accidents if other motorists behave in an irresponsible way, parents can take steps to reduce the chances a child will be seriously hurt or killed in an accident. According to CBS Local, one of the best things that parents can do to increase the chances their children will avoid injury if an accident happens is to use a rear-facing car seat.

Rear-Facing Car Seats Could Help Children Survive Accidents

According to CBS Local, studies show that rear-facing child seats are extremely effective in preventing injuries in situations where a frontal collision happens as well as in situations where a side collision occurs.

Researchers also recently conducted studies to examine the impact of rear-facing seats when a rear-end crash happens. The research was conducted by experts at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.  The researchers conducted multiple tests on rear-facing child seats in rear-end collisions.  Each of the tests determined that the rear-facing seat was effective at absorbing the force of the crash impact.  The force of the impact was first transferred from the car seat’s shell into the seat of the vehicle and then into the vehicle itself. This left the occupant of the car seat safe from much of the force of the crash.

Rear-facing seats have been found not only to absorb much of the force and impact of a crash to keep babies safe, but also to keep the baby’s head and neck supported in the event that an accident occurs. This can also help to save a young child’s life or to prevent serious, permanent injury from occurring if a child becomes involved in a motor vehicle accident.

This recent research into the benefits of rear-facing seats in rear-end crashes further confirms that these types of car seats can help children to survive potentially life-threatening motor vehicle accidents. The safety benefits of rear-facing car seats are a key reason why the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to keep toddlers in rear-facing seats until they are at least two years of age. At that time, children will usually reach the maximum height-and-weight limits for rear-facing car seat and will need to move into seats for older children.

While parents can help keep kids safe by using the right car seat, ultimately it is up to every driver on the road to behave in a responsible way in order to reduce the chances a child or other motorist will be hurt or killed. If a driver fails to use reasonable care while operating his vehicle, victims of a resulting car accident should contact a Miami injury lawyer for help as soon as possible.
