Young Girl in Critical Condition After Electrical Shock at MGM
When visiting a hotel or other public accommodation, you have the right to expect that the space will be reasonably safe for you and that precautions will be taken by property owners to eliminate hazards or, at a minimum, to warn guests about risks that exist.
Unfortunately, property owners and operators do not always fulfill their responsibilities to ensure a safe
environment for their guests. According to Fox 5, a six-year-old girl recently experienced serious injuries when she sustained a shock at MGM National Harbor Hotel and Casino.
When a property owner fails to provide a reasonably safe premises, victims can pursue a claim to recover compensation. Miami premises liability attorneys can provide representation to help those who have been harmed to take appropriate legal action to get the monetary damages they need as a result of being injured.
Young Girl Faces Critical Injuries After Electric Shock at MGM Grand
According to Fox 5, the six year old girl was with her parents in the MGM Grand hotel when an accident occurred. The girl was walking near the resort when she touched a metal railing that was located near an outdoor water fountain. She sustained a shock when she touched the railing.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight. A security guard rushed over to provide help to the young victim, but also sustained a shock. The girl sustained critical injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital. The security guard also sustained non life-threatening injuries and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
The hotel released a statement describing the incident as a “horrible accident,” that they were “heartbroken over.” The area of the resort where the incident happened has been closed to the public while investigators from MGM, as well as public investigators for the county, conduct an investigation in order to try to determine what had gone wrong.
The president of a company specializing in electrical work for commercial and residential properties who has experience installing outdoor water fountains indicated to Fox 5 that incidents like this one were very rare. However, the electrical expert did indicate that injuries can occur in the event that someone gets between the ground and the electric.
There are supposed to be special safety devices on all modern fountain installations in order to make certain that this type of incident does not occur, but obviously something went wrong in this particular fountain and railing.
When an injury happens on a property, Miami premises liability attorneys can provide help to victims and their families in understanding whether they can pursue a claim for compensation from the property owner. Owners of commercial properties who invite customers in for the company’s economic benefit have the highest duty of care that they owe to visitors. They are expected to regularly inspect the premises to make certain it is safe and to provide warning of hazards or to correct high-risk conditions when possible.
If a property owner fails to ensure that a premises is reasonably safe, that property owner can be held accountable for any losses that result from negligence or failure to fulfill a legal duty.
