Modern medical advances may offer a glimmer of hope to a devastating cancer diagnosis. When the medical establishment fails to deliver the expected standard of care, however, that hope can quickly fade. Sadly, oncology mistakes happen alarmingly often.

Early diagnosis of cancer is crucial. Fortunately, modern medicine provides important tools to diagnose cancer at the early stages when treatment options may still be effective and patients have a good chance of remission. A doctor can deprive a patient of the opportunity to start treatment early by failing to order the right tests or to read medical results accurately.
Equally harmful, a doctor may misdiagnose a false positive for cancer and, subsequently, subject the patient to unnecessary, damaging treatments. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause hair loss, exhaustion and destruction of healthy cells, for example. These side effects are worthwhile to send the cancer into remission or to slow the progress of the tumors, but are devastating to an otherwise healthy body.
Radiology and Chemotherapy Treatment Mistakes
Doctors need to precisely measure the amount of chemotherapy drugs or radiation to deliver to a patient. Too much can make a patient ill and cause permanent physical damage. Too little might allow the cancer to grow.
Excessive radiation causes radiation poisoning and can actually trigger cancer. These are not permitted to have contact with loved ones for fear of contamination, an added trauma at an already difficult time.
Patients who suffer from rare cancers may also be prescribed designer medications produced by compound pharmacies. These small specialty pharmacies are only licensed to create small doses of pharmaceuticals under specific doctors’ orders and are, thus, subject to less stringent regulations than large drug manufacturers. Compound pharmacies are required to make drugs in sterile facilities, but without the risk of inspection. In the past these companies have not always complied with this law. Injection of contaminated or adulterated drugs can lead to deadly bacterial or fungal exposure.
