When coupled with a seat belt, the airbag is one of the most effective means of protecting front seat occupants during a collision. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that airbags reduce death of drivers in frontal crashes by 29 percent and of front seat teen and adult passengers by 30 percent. When a seat belt is used the reduction of deaths in frontal crashes reaches 52 percent.

Common Injuries Caused by Defective Airbags

The bags are supposed to deploy upon impact to cushion occupants from hard objects within the cabin. Defective airbags might not deploy when necessary, leaving you without this important safety benefit. Other defects can cause worse injuries than had the airbag not deployed. Damages that may result include:

  • Head injuries and fractures from hitting the dashboard or windshield when the airbag does not deploy
  • Broken bones from a forceful airbag deployment
  • Wounds and lacerations caused by metal parts released during airbag deployment
  • Inappropriate and sudden airbag deployment, when no car crash has occurred

Takata Airbag Recalls

Prior to a crash, the airbags remain tucked away in compartments in the steering wheel, dashboard or side panels. Sensors alert a small canister within the airbag that the vehicle has hit a hard object, which then triggers release of a gas that inflates the bags. Within seconds the fully inflated bags fill the car with a protective cushion.

The canisters of the Takata airbags, however, were filled with a highly volatile gas that would sometimes explode, sending shards of sharp shrapnel flying into the cabin. Many occupants received serious piercing wounds and deep lacerations, which were – in some cases – deadly.

In many cases, the crash was barely bad enough to trigger the airbag deployment, meaning victims who would have walked away with only minor scrapes and bruises instead were killed or severely injured. A high humidity environment, like we have in Florida and Texas, is a primary factor in causing the explosive reaction.

Takata knew about the problem approximately a decade before its first recall. Even amidst this clear danger, recall of Takata airbags has been shockingly slow. Therefore, many occupants were injured or died needlessly after the company discovered the defect.

GM Ignition Switch Defect

GM initiated the largest recall in auto history because of a defective ignition switch. Any weight, such as multiple keys or a basic key chain, caused the ignition switch to shut off. Hence, the car lost steering, brakes, power and forward motion. In addition, the airbags also did not deploy during the crash.
